StoryTribe lets you customise characters visually. So instead of endlessly describing people in text prompts, you build them. This makes your storyboards clearer, faster to iterate, and easier to communicate with collaborators (or AI).

How to customise StoryTribe characters

This guide walks you through how to customise StoryTribe characters step by step.

Why character customisation matters

Characters are central to storytelling. When a character’s appearance, posture, or emotion is unclear, misunderstandings creep in.

With StoryTribe, character customisation helps you:

• Communicate ideas visually instead of verbally
• Keep characters consistent across scenes
• Iterate quickly without redrawing
• Give AI clearer visual context for better outputs

Step 1: Add a character to your scene

Start by opening a storyboard and selecting a scene.

• From the toolbar on the left side of the StoryTribe editor, click Characters.
• Choose a character and click to place it on the canvas as your starting point.
• Resize or reposition the character as needed.
• Once the character is placed, you can begin customising.

Step 2: Flip or turn your character

Click the character to use the blue contextual menu to change the direction your character is facing.

• Flip character: Mirrors the character (left ↔ right).
• Turn around: Makes the character face away from the camera. It’s useful for over-the-shoulder shots.

Step 3: Customise appearance

Select the character and click ‘Character Settings’ from the blue contextual menu.

You can adjust the following options in each tab of the Character Edit panel:

• Head angle & hairstyle
• Facial expressions (e.g. happy, sad, angry)
• Tops (e.g. casual, business)
• Arm poses (talking, giving/receiving, crossed arms)
• Leg positions (standing, walking, running, sitting)
• Others
  • Eyewear (glasses, sunglasses)
  • Facial hair (moustache, beard)

These visual controls let you define a character’s identity quickly without writing a long AI prompt.

Step 4: Search by attributes

Use the search field in the Character Edit panel to quickly find characters by attributes such as:

• Outfit (casual, business)
• Pose (running, walking, sitting)
• Emotion (happy, angry, sad)
• Accessories (glasses, sunglasses)
• Role/job (police, teacher, student)

Step 5. Customise characters with Tribe AI

If you can’t find a pose or character attribute in the Character Edit panel, you can use Tribe AI to create it. Tribe AI lets you generate characters in any pose, expression, outfit, or feature you need — beyond the preset options.

Your can choose a character to use as a visual references when working with StoryTribe’s AI.

This helps:

• Reduce ambiguity in AI-generated results
• Keep character appearance consistent
• Align AI outputs with your visual intent

Instead of describing a character in text, you show the AI exactly who they are.
